About 'Hotel room'
'Hotel room' is an interdisciplinary composition for an ensemble of Clarinets, recorders and Harpsichord, a sculpture-score, and poetry. The ensemble is divided in 2 groups who play a musical-game together. Group 1 - Clarinets & Recorders play from a score made from latex sheets which they follow by walking around the space during the composition. Right before the performance begins, each group receive 'signs' to play on the other groups score. These signs will influence and change their performance as well as create un-expected meetings between the two groups.
Each group plays 15 musical miniatures based on 15 short poems. The expression and musicality of each musical miniature is influenced by the poem.
The length of the performance depends on the interpretation of the musicians and the interaction of the game between the two groups.
Thus, 'Hotel room' is somewhere between an exhibition, installation and a performance.
The audience is welcome to have a sit or wonder around the space with a personal poetry booklet, to go in and out and possibly read out-loud some poems if feeling inspired.
Performance instructions
The 3 players ensemble is divided in 2 groups:
1. Clarinet & Recorder
2. Harpsichord
Each group plays its part individually, there's no common score. The 'togetherness' will happen by the way the ensemble will perform the piece.
Signs game - through which the two groups meet musically. Each group receives several of the following signs: Silence, Imitation, Play melody no.16 and Noise. Just before the performance, they will place the signs on the other groups part, without consulting between the two groups and/or making common decisions.
The musical material - each group is playing 15 miniature-duets (no. 16 belongs to the 'Signs game').
Group 1 plays them in a descending order: from the longest and most spaced to the shortest and most condense.
Group 2 plays them in a different order, the order in which they were written.
Group 2 plays only segments of each duet using looping games.
The Poems - each of the miniature-duets is based on a short poem. The poems are used by the musicans as indication for musical expression and are given to the audience in the shape of a small book.
Performance space, scores and audience - group no.1 will be moving in the performance space, following their score which is written on latex sheets that will be hanged around the space. The audience is welcome to move around the space as well.
Since 'Hotel room' is a game piece its length varies in each performance and depends on the musicians decisions on-spot. The audience can walk in and out form the performance space.
