Street view
Street view is taking place in de Vogelab, a studio with two glass walls in the heart of de Vogelbuurt in Amsterdam-noord. The idea emerged from the interesting situations created by the charachttaristics of the studio - a space where one is isolated on one hand and exposed on the other, seperated while being part, observing and being observed.
During August and September, six artists/groups will create their own Street views - music-based interdisciplinary and site-specific projects in the studio and neighbourhood. Reflecting on this theme from different perspectives and aiming to engage in a dialogue with the neighbourhood, about the dualities of personal-public, individual-collective, in the context of space, art and society

This is not nessecariliy a community-art project, but more of an invitation to inspire from the daily life of a residential neighbourhood, where many changes are happening, like the new noord metro line, increase in tourism and the ongoing processes of gentrification.
Through the micro - routines in de Vogelbuurt, the various practices of the artists and residents, to reflect on the macro - how can art and society feed off of each other.
You're most welcome to join the six events presenting each project and the end celebration on Sat. Oct. 5th, 19:30 with one flow connecting all projects.

sTREET VIEW ARTISTS AND EVENTS
#1 De Nieuwe VredevogelZvov, the first group resident in Street view, is on the hunt for the next bird who will bring peace to the world.
And what better place to search then de Vogelbuurt, whose streets are named after various birds. By talking to the residents of each streets, and exploring bird sounds, Zvov will create 14 tiny songs, profiling the chartaristics of every bird. On the event you can listen to the songs, observe the exhibition presenting the birds and vote for the next bird who will bring world peace. We will meet in de Vogelab at 17:00 and go for a musical tour in the neighbourhood to meet all the birds, and then gather again in the studio for the final voting. Zvov are Maya Felixbrodt (Viola, voice) and Shaya Feldman (Bass, voice). #3 VogelgeluidenThe 3rd artist in Street view, Robbert van Hulzen will create the soundscape of de Vogelbuurt by collecting sounds of people, objects and happening in the neighbourhood.
So how does de Vogelbuurt sound like? come listen From Robbert about his future work in de Vogelab: "During my residency in Street View I want to share my love for electronic music and sound manipulation with the neighborhood. In addition to self-designed electronic sounds, I want to make use of recordings from the neighborhood, made by myself and hopefully by others from the neighborhood. I will collect exciting, weird, characteristic, unusual, boring, long, short, loud soft sounds and give them a place in one or more pieces of electronic music. By the end of my stay, the doors and the speakers open and I would like to share the results with the neighborhood." #5 TogethernessChristine Cornwell, the 5th artists in Street view, will create with music, text, video and performative happenings her own journal about de Vogelbuurt, by engaging in proccesses of sharing, response and reflection with de Vogelbuurt's residents.
The form is as open as the process. The concluding sharing is from 17:00 in het Vogelab. From Christine about her work: "As an artist I am searching for an inclusive language to break down the traditional walls surrounding performance and art works. As a human I am searching for small gestures which may echo or unfold through creating safe spaces for expression; resulting in sharing - be it musical or otherwise. As a member of the community of life on this planet I am searching for an expression that creates an opportunity for others to feel the joy of connection and thrill of curiosity, to share even the smallest moment of a wonder, confusion or surprise at the living world we walk by every day." |
#2 Play date! muzikale spellenSynzine, the second group resident in Street view, invite you to come out and play, musical games! during their stay at the Vogelab, the Synzine team will create new musical games inspired by the games played in the streets of de Vogelbuurt in collaboration with the children of the neighbourhood.
Yes everyone can play! you don't need to be a musician... bring a musical instrument or just yourself in a playful mode ;) There will be new games to play and test, a new Synzine to take home and music made from games to listen to. Synzine at Street view team are Maya Verlaak, Richard Stenton and Maya Felixbrodt. #4 BlikkenwisselingThe 4th artist in Street view, Miriam den bore, will create a live installation playing the Violin inside de Vogelab, whose walls are transparent. Observing while being observed, she will create new musical pieces describing her feelings, sensations and thoughts about eye-contact and daily human communication.
From Miriam about her work: "Exchange of glances. An empty space filled with expressions of the moment becomes both a point of attention and a mirror of the neighborhood. People walk past the window, look inside. From the inside a glance out – we are seen. Are we hiding something? I am looking for that awkward moment of a meeting glance, the mutual feeling of being caught and what that does to us, and then converting it into an expression that connects both sides of the glass. Initially by being there and translating the above feelings into music. Over time, by shaping my playing and installation in such a way that it invites the passer-by to interact. In an Amsterdam that is gentrifying at high speed and where lack of living space is the talk of the day, I investigate questions that arise now that we live closer to each other. So many different realities that cross each other every day and shape our society. We complain a lot about each other, about our neighbors and housemates, all those tourists. Changing places to avoid situations is becoming increasingly difficult and that is why we better start confronting ourselves. By magnifying our small frustrations with artistic means, we call them by their names. Hopefully, to see that we are a community rather than a random collision of situations." #6 straatverhalenMoving strings, the 6th and last group in Street view, will create site-specific moving-sounding pieces about unique locations in de Vogelbuurt. By talking to the neighbourhood's residents they will collect stories with personal imporatnce - a place where one likes to spend time on their own, where a meaningful event happend, a path that is special for someone.
Moving strings team for Street view are Jonathan Nagel (Double-bass), Camille Verhaak (Clarinet). Alex Welch (Viola), Noortje Kohne (Viola) and Maya Felixbrodt (Viola). |
